for large amount of cherries to pit , what do you use

  • #2
My cherry tree has cling stone cherries, so pitting them is a pain no matter what method I use. None of the traditional cherry-pitting methods work as if you try to push the stone out it just comes out with all of the flesh still attached to it, and all you've actually succeeded in doing is removing the skin.
A couple years ago I discovered the best method for pitting cling-stone cherries, and that's to freeze them before hand, then crush the frozen cherries with something like a rolling pin. The frozen fruit breaks apart easily (it never freezes completely solid), and separates easily from the stone. It's still kind of laborious, but then pitting cherries is laborious not matter what method you use.

I own 2 cherry pitters but actually prefer to use a knife and semi-frozen cherries are the easiest to deal with. However I do it afterwards it always looks as if there has been a bloodbath.
