What soil type are you growing on.
I get a good crop on clay over limestone.
Near Worksop on heavy clay soil

Most likely Gooseberry Sawfly, can strip a bush of leaves very quickly.
Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!
