  • Transplanting rasps

My autumn rasps raised bed is getting pretty congested and is getting awkward to get to the fruit as they grow in the middle of the bed as well as round the edge. I might be able to expand the bed a bit but just wondering how easy it would be to move some of the raspberry canes as i imagine they will be pretty tangled up in there. Any advice? Was thinking I’d best do it in maybe March ?

Best to do it now, as long as the soil is not frozen. Mine are already starting to grow here in the South West.

Just cut a chunk out with a sharp spade. As long as it has some thick roots and at least one strong bud it will grow just fine.

I dug up all my fruit bushes including Autumn Rasps last Spring, intending to chuck them out but I didn't have the heart in the end, so potted them up in temp pots not really expecting them to survive. They all survived and fruited in the pots last year. They'll finally get planted into new beds soon.
My experience is they're much tougher than I expected and are easy to move.
Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!

Good to know thanks. I would have thought that, as they are constantly trying to spread beyond their bed. I did have a problem a few years ago though when I bought more bare root rasps and none took. Will do it a bit sooner then.

Moved them all and looks like they have taken ok. Have started to see some new shoots coming from the ground on a couple of them. Thanks
