  • First peach flower

My little peach tree has a flower (just one).

    And here's the whole tree:

I grew this tree from seed, sown in September 2020, so it's only 18 months old (or not even that, since the seeds took 2 months to actually germinate). As you can see, it grew a lot in just a year.
They do say that in ideal conditions peaches can fruit in their second year after growing from seed, and I guess it really is true. Although since I only have one flower, I won't be getting any fruit. Things look hopeful for next year, though.

Wow, already! That gives me hope to get a few flowers on my little trees next year. I found 4 (!!!) popping up last summer on the allotment where I'd added homemade compost. Could be either peach or nectarines. The two I kept are about half a metre high now. I'd braced myself for a long wait to get fruit.

I actually have a second flower bud coming on this one, too. It was hidden before so I didn't notice it.

I don't remember. I saved seeds from multiple types and cold stratified them all in one bag of damp compost in the fridge, so they all got mixed up.
It's definitely a peach, not a nectarine, as I didn't save seeds from any nectarines. I saved seeds from some white flat peaches and yellow round peaches, and possibly also some round white peaches (although I'm not certain about that last one)
I have four in total, and two are quite a bit larger than the other two, so I feel they may well be of two different varieties.

It's crazy how quick they grow. In less than a year my biggest one has reached over a metre, with a trunk about 1.5cm thick.

Also, the whole reason I decided to try growing some peach trees from seed is because they say that, unlike any other fruit tree, they are actually well suited to growing from seed, as they reach fruiting age very quickly (in ideal conditions within 2 years) and usually come fairly true from seed (unlike most tree fruit).

I have been trying almonds. I also did not mark them clearly. A crop of likely looking seedlings has been the result.
