  • Apple variety "Limelight" ?

    Hello.
Does anyone here grown the apple variety Limelight? I grafted a piece a few weeks ago and it is now producing blossom. They appear to be deep red in colour. Is this correct for Limelight? For some reason I didn't expect red blossom - it being a yellow/green variety. Just wondering if I have been sent something else.
    I've attached a photo.
    Many Thanks.

I've never grown it myself, but looking it up online, it seems it's meant to have white flowers, which makes sense for a green variety.

My apple tree has almost red buds that open to almost white. I don't think there is a variety that has pure white flowers.
      Those buds look closed.

It's pretty uncommon for apple buds to be quite that dark when at that stage of maturity, though. usually by that point the buds are a paler pink. I've only seen red-skinned varieties that dark that close to opening.

Personally, i would recommend leaving the buds on for now, let them pollinate, and see what colour the developing fruitlets end up. Then remove the fruitlets once you've established the colour.

            Many thanks for your replies.
I have a Baya Marisa (Tickled Pink) apple tree. It produces very dark red apples and the flesh is red too. The buds on the "Limelight" look just as dark .That first photo does look very similar. I shall just have to be patient and see how it developes, at least it looks like the graft took - I just hope if it's not Limelight it is something edible.
            Thanks again.

              Hello.
              Just an update.
The blossom has opened and it is white not red, maybe white with a slight pink tinge. Would it be best practice to remove them now or just let them grow out?

You certainly shouldn't let them actually grow fruit this year.
It may be worth letting them pollinate and grow to about pea sized before removing them, though, just to check what colour the fruit are.

I will let them grow. See what happens. None of my other trees have any blossom left on them - so not sure if they will get pollinated.
