  • Taking cuttings

OK another question, do you take cuttings of plants where possible or are you just in the category I used to be in mainly the 'can't be bothered' category. Until this year I never took cuttings but having given my allotment plots up and having a Redcurrant, a Whitecurrant and a Blackcurrant fruit bush delivered end of last year as bare roots, I've decided (using a hormone rooting compound) to take four cuttings of the new softwood shoots from each plant to propagate more free plants for next year and build up a collection of bushes in pots.

This started after the other half wanted me to ask next door if I could take a cutting from their Hydrangea that was shooting which I was allowed to do and took three. They rooted easily so I took another four which have all rooted so I now have seven free plants. I've next taken 4 x Clematis and 4 x Fushia from another neighbour with permission and I'm waiting for them to show signs they have also rooted.

Have you taken cuttings and reading my new endeavour would you now consider doing it if you haven't so far and if you do take cuttings what do you mainly propagate?

With currants and gooseberries I just scrounge pruned off bits from another gardener or plot holder over winter and throw them into the ground like spears.
    They rarely fail.
Some other plants are more tricky.

This year I've taken gooseberry cuttings, taken when I pruned it.
Plus clematis, dahlia, pelagonium, verbena, penstemon and snapdragons.
I end up taking a lot of cuttings through accidently breaking bits off, feeling bad and sticking them into water or compost just to give them a chance! They don't always survive but it makes me feel better
