  • Fruit tree in container, apricot?

    Hi all,

we had a new patio this Spring and I fancy putting a fruit tree in a pot to replace our two containerised acers that we finally planted out.
I really like the idea of a fruit tree in a container but fear I am kidding myself as to the reality of it actually a) bearing fruit and b) not getting huge!
I do like fresh apricots, I think it's the memory of a weeks holiday in the Algarve one June. The villa had an apricot tree in the garden, and we 'nicked' the ripe fruit off it before the owner picked them all! So that gets me wondering whether it's realistic to try and grow one in a pot?

Or if not an apricot, what other fruit might actually bear fruit in a pot? Not apple or pear as we have some grafted trees in the garden itself. It's no good looking on the sites selling fruit trees because they only ever have pictures of fully laden 'mini' trees!
    Thanks.

I have an apricot tree in a pot which was sold as a patio tree. It is now about 5 years old and has produced plenty of flowers in the spring, but has never produced any fruit. This may be because it tends to flower in February and then get frosted.

I've not had much success with fruit trees in pots, with really the only decent crops coming from blueberries.

I guess I wouldn't mind so much as apricot/plum/cherry blossom is very pretty.

I was wondering about which variety of apricot but I think maybe it's a no-no when even a variety called Compacta apparently isn't good in pots.

"Compacta is a naturally-dwarf apricot, probably the best choice if you want to grow an apricot in a small space.

This is the apricot variety featured on BBC Gardeners' World in October 2017. However we do not recommend growing this tree in a container, even though this was suggested in the programme."

So maybe a cherry? I've seen there are plums and gages that you can grow in a container, but I can't imagine how they would be kept small enough. I'm still googling though. But there's nothing like a personal recommendation.
