  • Outdoor Dessert Grape

I'm sure I saw an old thread somewhere here about grape varieties for growing outdoors in colder areas (Scotland I think) but be jiggered if I can find it - please feel free to point me in the right direction if you can. Otherwise...

OH has had the bright spark of an idea that he'd like to grow a dessert grape - I've told him it's a daft idea but actually wouldn't mind backing down if it might just work .

We've no greenhouse/poly tunnel on our plot so it will have to grow unprotected, probably up & over the bench/arbour thingy (just where I want to plant our kuri squash ).

We can offer all day exposure to sun (when we have it) but we're not in an ideal location here so it would need to be tolerant of not being 'dahn saarf' where the weather's more temperate, probably with a shorter growing season than other varieties if there is such a thing?

Can anyone offer a suggested variety?

    Hi Andraste,

Just spotted that nobody has answered your question. There are some vine experts here, but maybe no-one can offer any info for your location.

Your best bet would be to talk to a vine specialist and see what they have to say.

But that said, we're at 500 m, so a bit higher than you and we have a short season between last frost (mid-April, most years, early May if very late) and then first frost around mid-October to 21 October. Temperatures get extremely cold in winter. Our temperatures are obviously much higher and the climate is much drier in summer. We have Black Muscat as a table grape and it does very well despite our abominable neglect. It seems to grow all over the place under assorted names: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Muscat

Found this thread, by the way: https://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gr...ne-in-scotland

It features some links you might find useful if they're still live (rather an old thread, I'm afraid).

        Hi Snoop Puss,

Thanks for the feedback re. the Black Muscat - and for finding that elusive old thread - I knew I'd seen one somewhere!
