I've bought 6 Autumn fruiting Raspberry canes and they are at present soaking in a bucket. They have a lot of roots and I'm wondering if I can trim them before planting? I have flower buckets or builder's buckets for them, do you think they're big enough? Thanks for any advice

Flo, I have raspberries gowing in builders buckets..(the orange ones front B & Q ). I have one plant in each bucket. I would say I get a fair crop , but the ones in the open ground give me a better crop...Having said that, they have spread everywhere and I am constantly pulling them up like weeds.

Their roots are superficial so it may well be worth mulching afterwards to help keep them moist and help them get better established.
I guess wider raypther than tall and thin pots might be the way to go?
What are your pots like bramble ?
That would be my concern for potted raspberry canes."Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

Should be ok at 1 per bucket if you feed them, after all lot are commercially grown in containers in tunnels with a drip watered\feed
I have 3 ruby beauty (semi dwarf) in each 40l pot and they yield well
One tip I have is make sure have plenty drainage holes so they don't get waterlogged over winter if outsideLast edited by It never rains..it pours; Yesterday, 10:49 PM.
