  • Another raspberry related question

I have been given some young raspberry canes - they are currently in pots and will be planted out soon, over next couple of weeks. They vary in height from 1 ft to 2ft 6ins. Should I cut these back after they are planted or do I leave them to grow as they will and cut them back next season? I don't know if they are summer or autumn fruiters - I could probably find out. Will that make a difference?

sorry to be a pain. I have read Valmarg's thread and your replies, which sort of prompted this question, because I was just going to plant them, mulch and hope!

I would plant them, wait and see what they turn into.
Then start your pruning when you know what you've got... summer or autumn fruiters.

I would plant them, mulch and hope. Then see from there. They do generally grow pretty easily so you should be fine.

I would definitely prune to about 8in once you plant them out. The reasoning behind this is that it makes the plants grow a stronger root system, which is what you want to start with. However as bobleponge said they usually grow pretty well regardless.
