  • fruit tree query

Hi, I am looking around for suitable fruit trees to have in large pots (I already have a pear tree) and have seen the following advertised at Dobies:

Victoria Plum is the most popular and delicious of all plums. It can be eaten fresh from the tree in August but is also perfect for cooking and jam making so can be enjoyed all year round. Apple Sunset has attractively flushed skin, a crisp bite and contains beautifully sweet juices.
These trees are grown on rootstocks which have been specially chosen to be suitable for the small to medium size garden and can be grown to fruit within the width taken up by a standard 6' fence panel. Simply select your site, plant and these self fertile trees will start cropping next summer, continuing for years to come. Delivered as 4-5' trees.

it doesn't mention them being suitable for pots but it does mention rootstocks suitable for small/medium gardens... Would they be ok in pots? the price is good... hence my looking at them!

    thanks, becs

They would get too large for pots, you need to look for dwarfing rootstock.

Try J Parkers, they have fruit trees in pots under fruit trees - patio/pots, from £10.95. They are not names I recognise though, look as if they are bred to be midget.

I've just ordered 5 fruit trees from chrisbower.co.uk for us and 2 neighbours. We've gone for their supercolumns that grow easily in pots on a sunny patio. They are a single trunk with spurs off with the fruit on. Can grow to 7' tall but only 2' wide. We're getting their Invincible Pear (2), Victoria Plum, Scrumptious Apple and Self-fertile Cox. All are self fertile and can be grown in Yorkshire. The Invincible flowers twice so if you get a late frost it should still set fruit. Works out at £15.85 per tree + delivery. If only one tree about £18.

They also do dwarf rootstock for most of their varieties some of which may be suitable for pots. Best email them or give them a call. I'll be posting about them later on so if you get one/some let me know and we can compare notes on how they grow and what results we get.
