i bet we have all ate worse without realising it,im thinking back to 4 years in the army,sometimes you just didnt ask what it was and after missing meals for maybe 2/3 days ,you werent bothered,after all,ant and decs careers depend on folks doing just that these days....

Our neighbour gave us a basket of sweet chestnuts last year. The first lot were braised with brussels and eaten whole - beautiful rich and creamy. One might almost say meaty.
The next day I cooked them and the broke them into pieces for a pasta sauce. Each one had a huge white maggot inside, about the size of the top of my thumb. Very meaty.
