  • Raspberry and current dilema!

Hi everyone, my raspberry and currrent canes arrived in the post today. The snow also arrived much to my horror. So I'm in need of some advice ( this is the first time I have attempted to grow fruit).I know I can't plant them out, the information leaflet said to wrap the raspberry cane roots in damp newspaper and leave them in a shed until I can plant them. Can I do the same with the currents? and how long will they keep like that? Any help would be most welcome.

    Thanks

Yes, as they are dormant now they should be ok for weeks. I hope the snow doesn't last that long!

With raspberries they usually recommend heeling them in until you are ready to plant them out in their final positions. This simply involves digging a small shallow hole, shoving the roots in so that the canes are at a low angle, and covering them over with soil. That keeps the roots damp because they don't like drying out. I have a lot of canes that I was in the process of moving now doing just that, waiting for the snow to clear.
The currants can be temporarily put into a pot with soil in, they aren't too fussy
