  • Strawberry temptation

Hi, just wondered if anyone can inform me about growing strawberries from seeds. I wondered is Strawberry temptation an alpine variety or a normal sized strawberry? Do they produce much fruit?
    Thank you kindly

Been looking at Strawberries myself today and came across this on victoriananursery.co.uk

    Strawberry Seed 'Sweet Temptation'
    Fragaria x ananassa 'Sweet Temptation'

A splendid normal size strawberry that is produced in profusion on compact plants. Ideal for hanging baskets or open ground alike. Spring and Summer sowing will ensure Autumn fruiting. Autumn sowing will ensure Spring and early Summer fruiting.

Possibly the cheapest way to establish your own strawberry bed is to grow your plants from seed - something so often forgotten, which is strange considering strawberries are the only fruit to bare their seed on the outside!

Good for cloche growing too. Self Fertile

I'm going to opt for plants this year as not confident to grow these from seed. Trying the red cascade trailing strawberry from jparkers.co.uk in hanging baskets.

I bought some of these as plug plants in Wilkinsons last week , I'm going to grow them in hanging baskets . It will be interesting to see how much fruit I get .

It has two chances , up or down.

I bought the plug plants from Wilkinson as well - 4 for £1.50, and they're looking very healthy so far. Planted a week ago and there's already new leaves shooting up.

I bought some seeds too, and was told that germination of them could be a bit hit and miss, which is why I also got the plants from Wilkinson. I put the seeds in about a month ago, and yesterday I saw the first tiny green shoot pop out, so be aware that it can take a while!

We bought the plug plants from Wilkos too and they are doing very nicely. We are interested in growing strawberries from seed, but read somewhere, that they are only annuals. Anyone shed any light on this for us please? Cheers, Spiderling.
I'd give up chocolate but I'm no quitter!

Most of my yellow strawberrys i planted in peat pockets did not come up, they all did in a tray though.

Can someone please tell me how many of these you can put in one hanging basket?

i've grown some from seed the last 2 years. they are slow to germinate, then seem to take a wee spurt after a few weeks. germination rate is about 50% (for me anyway!). The fruits from last year weren't plentiful but they were nice and sweet. i've got last years in a hanging basket in the greenhouse this year and they have their first flowers - only a couple though so not sure how many we'll get this year.

                  hope this helps?

The growth spurt is certainly true! I planted some alpine seeds in Feb, they took weeks to come through then seemed to do nothing. In the plast couple of weeks, they've just flown up. Totally outgrown their pot! It said to plant out in May, so I'm keeping them in another couple of weeks, but they really are getting big!

Grew alpine from seed last year and got fabulous plants and hundreds of strawberries. Unfortunately we didn't like the strawberries so I ditched them all last september. But they germinated and grew exceptionally well.

                        3 or 4 to a 12" basket.

                          Thanks very much.

My baskets are the ones from Poundland so not massive, they are 9" across, I assume 2 in each should be fine then.

I put 5 in a basket , 4 round the edge and one in the middle . I just feed once a week . I also put 4 in a 1/2 circle planter on the wall . Iv'e been growing them like this for the last few years , mainly to keep them away from slugs . My Temptation strawbs are still growing , no flowers yet , but I have got flowers on my bog standard garden ones . My Alpine ones seem to be very slow in growing , they were started from seed . They have got to about 1 in and just sit there .
