Morning, I am hoping to build a raspberry cage to stop my cats digging around the plants. I was just wondering how tall I should make it? I am growin Joan J and Autumn Bliss.
i would make it tall enough for you to walk into, thus protecting from cats and birds ....... and allowing you to get in there and water/weed/harvest etc without having to dismantle it.
I have built one which literally covers the cane and nothing else, I built it when they were in full fruit so I knew exactly how tallt to build it, and they are set in a bed so I just made the cage a little wider and longer to cover. The nets I have threaded canes through the bottom so they are weighted down but are also very easy to just lift up and place on top of the cage so you can pick the fruit and do any weeding you need to. I keep them well mulched so I don't need to weed too much. It all depends on what space you have really. Good luck!
Thanks for the advice both of you....think I might flex my (underused) DIY muscles and build something a bit permanent around 6 foot high! That should be tall enough for the canes and for me!
i got some of those climing plant arches from wilkies for 75% off last autumn, so only cost £1.25 each, am gonna put mine in a row and cover with netting
i built mine 7ft high by 10 ft long, made use of timber and I acquired some scaffolding mesh, it was in a skip and was going to be binned, its excellent and has withstood the winds etc....
