Holes in tree trunk

Help,i rescued a lovely old apple tree a few years ago,had lovely apples from it too.Went to do some hoeing today and saw on it some holes which i can only describe as like worm holes!Anyone got any idea what these can be?What should i do about it?

woodpecker?? woodworm?? beetles?? how big are they

Hi Lynda,they actually DO look like the worm holes that you get on old furniture.Can it be treated?

Thanks Linda,have nipped out to nursery now.Treat in march apparently.
