Raspberries from seed?

Just been looking at ebay and I can get either 50 Tulameen or Glen Moy raspberry seeds for £2.00 inc postage!

Anybody tried growing them from seed? Any idea of germination percentage? How long before I could have raspberries & cream? And finally, are Tulameen and Glen Moy good varieties and is it worth it?

They are good varieties but how do they know they are true to type & not crossbreds ?

Also I don't know how long it would take for a seed grown one to fruit either.

Sounds a long term thing to me Sanadger. but hey, it's only £2 & you can have loads of raspberries.

Yeah, Its not much outlay.....but don't most of the scams work that way.!

Time for a fable thats true methinks.

Opens the door to a little old lady with grubby mac and shopping bag. Poor old dear is in tears " I've just been to my brothers up the road, (sob sob)cleaning his house for him while he is away on hols" ...."Came out of house, shut door behind me and locked keys and my purse in house"
Sits her down, makes her a cup of tea and generally tries to comfort her.
"Where do you live luv".... " About 10 miles away, but I've got no Metro fare".)sob sob!)..."How much is your Metro fare?"....."Its £1.50 and if you could lend me it, I'd bring it straight back in the morning" ....." No prob luv, we'll have another pot of tea then you can be on your way, want a biccie?" ...."Thanks, youre so kind, I'm sure you'll get your reward in heaven"
Finishes her tea and biccie's and off she goes with the £2.00 I gave her (Had nothing smaller)

Didn't come back next day with money!

Read in local paper a few days later....'Little old lady arrested for fraud'
Apparently she had been doing this for a living! She must have been a paid up member of equity or carried an onion in her shopping bag....those tears were real I tell you! We worked out, her hourly rate must have been about £10.00 plus what she could stuff into her bag when you were'nt looking!

Moral of the story "Never trust little old ladies with tears in there eyes!!!!!

Got the raspbeery seeds now but I think I will leave it til Spring to sow them. In the meantime I was mentioning it to one of my fellow allotmenteers who pipes up "You should have said, there's raspberry bushes growing behind my greenhouse I want rid of" I didn't let on that when I had been filling my watering can I had pinched a few to eat as they looked so good!!!

Hopefully I'll get the plants at the weekend but not sure what to do about the canes? Do I cut them to a certain height when planting? Going to put up posts and wire eventually but that will have to wait for the moment!

Snadger plant the raspberry canes and then chop them down to about 6 inches tall. You should really transplant fruit bushes and canes starting November but it is nearly November so they should be fine.

Thanks Lesley, Feels like november today! Just recieved my GardenAction Newsletter which mimmics exactly what you have just told me so it looks like its all systems go for this weekend, weather permitting of course!!!!
