  • Apple and gooseberry pruning

I was going to do this today but I was not sure what was new growth and what wasn't.

For the apples I guess it is the bit that is greener but for gooseberries how do I know?

Don't know about the gooseberries, but with apples, you should be able to see "knuckles" where two different seasons of growth join. However, some knuckles will be a half-way point in the year, when some trees briefly stop growing and then resume a few weeks later.

You don't need to worry too much about the 'new' growth with the gooseberries - just prune to make sure the bush stays open. Many people don't prune every year, so don't feel you have to.

      Have fun (and wear gloves!)

Gooseberries only need pruning to keep the cup shape with on open centre.
