Grape Vine advice needed

Hi All

My dad has given me what looks like 3 sticks. Actually they are 3 cuttings from a grape vine of his.

They've been in water on the kitchen windowsill for about a week.

Am I doing this right or do I need to do something else?

You should plant the stems in compost with rooting powder.

I grew quite a few from softwood cuttings. 5 to a pot and a poly bag over the top got mine rooting!

Not sure about how to go on with hardwood cuttings though!

Every year when I prune my grape I push the prunings into a pot of old compost, kept watered in the garden. They usually shoot around the same time as the parent plant, but the roots do not get going until later. I've usually got the cuttings rooted and ready to plant for autumn. Pencil thickness is best, I cut about 1/2 inch below the bottom 'eye', and have cuttings about 12 inches long. I don't know if this is the recommended way, but it's always worked for me.

I was in Piesport (source of Piesporter wine !) a couple of years ago. The hotel had put hard wood cuttings into water filled wine bottles - seemed a lovely way of completing the circle.

I did 4 last year - 2 obliged with roots and have found new homes. 6 are on the go this year. The only difficulty is breaking the bottle neck to get the whole plant out.
