  • Nectarine? Tree

Mother planted a nectarine stone years ago, she gave me the resulting plant which went into my garden. I can't remember how many years it has been growing but this year we had 1 large juicy peach off it - it was delicious! I was thinking about digging it up but it will get a stay of execution until next year, maybe we will get 2 peaches next year.

Does it survive outside in the winter. Thought that peaches and such were frost tender. How long ago did your mother plant it. Would love to give it a try.

      Hi bramble
I would say it was at least 7 years since she planted it and it has been outside ever since. It stands about 10ft and is planted in a 2 ft wide patch between paved drive and slabbed patio. It is south facing and has a fence behind it - I suppose this all helps to protect it from the worst weather, but it has never seemed to suffer much damage from frosts.

I think that this is just because it was "seed" grown. If you grow wisteria from seed it take years for it to flower.

Peaches & Nectarines can grow outside Bramble but the do best in a greenhouse. If you don't have a greenhouse a south facing wall is the next best thing as it heats up during the day & this leaches out over night ( like a storage heater) & you can fool the plant into thinking it;s growing in th esouth of France rather than Dublin

Last year we only had one peach on the tree and that went rotten and fell off.
Here are a couple of photos of the tree this year, there must have been 50 peaches on it. Some have been attacked and fallen off, and even with recent winds most are holding on and they are enormous but they won't soften up. I now have gourmet chooks who eat peaches!
