  • How many strawbs in a raised bed?

My strawbs didn't do that well last year in an old wheelbarrow and a container so I'm moving them to a raised bed (4' x4') to see if they fair any better. How many plants would work best in a bed of this size?

Mine are in a bed at my lottie and I dont know what size it is, but I can walk between the rows and the plants are about a trowel length apart in rows. That probably doesnt help you though lol.

i grow my strawberries 12" apart in both directions but you could squezze 16 into a 4x4 bed
above the clouds the sun is shining and the sky is blue. if you look hard enough you can just about see it!

My strawberries are in long window boxes (sorry can't tell the size at the mo) but I have 3 plants in each one and they were great last year.
        Hope this helps.

The very max I'd plant in there would be 16 ie one per square foot but if you want to maximise crop then I'd be inclined to limit it to 12 to give them a bit more space to grow.

Not going to have a bed ready on the lottie in time this year (concentrating on main veg beds) so am going to plant them up in old car tyres, think I'm going for three per tyre but that's got more to do with the number of tyres I have than anything else.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I grow mine at 12" spacing although this can get a bit tight in a good season. Recommended spacing is 18" between plants and 30" between rows for summer fruiting varieties.

I planted mine about 12" apart on my allotment, on the recommendation of our lady secretary who has a ginormous strawberry bed! Since my bed was only about 3ft x 5ft, rather than planting them in a grid formation, I used staggered rows so that every plant is still 12" apart but the distances are diagonal, so you can get more in (if that makes sense!).

              Sort of:

              Code:
