Lychee

Has anyone any experience of growing lychees?

I have grown one from the stone. It's about 3 months old and seems to had stopped growing. Some of the leaves are going brown at the edges - it's not touching anyhthing, it sits on my table in the sun.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It sounds like too much water - that can turn the edges of the leaves brown. In the winter which is the rest period for lychee the soil should be allowed to go dust dry before watering and when the growth begins in spring you should feed it every week.

I LOVE lychees. When is the best time to plant them?

Of 9 lychee stones planted in a bag of 'ericaceous' compost, 1 has sprouted.

It is c3½"/9cm high and has 2 coppery leaves. I think I read somewhere that they stay this height for quite a while.

I assume that the next stage is to pot the plant - using the compost.

At the moment, the bag and seedling are sitting in the sun lounge - I had the bag outside but was afraid of frosts.

Any comments/suggestions welcome.

When you say 'dry as dust' is that from, say, now till March?

Feshie I have checked my information again and that is all it says - winter months. So I would go for December till February.

Lychee leaves turning brown

Thank you so much for the advice regarding leaves turning brown. I too have grown a lychee from the stone and it has been doing really well until recently the leaves have turned brown. Can anyone advise me where it should be sited for the winter please? I have avoided putting it in a draught or too near a radiator. Prior to winter it lived happily in the porch but it is now too cold for it to stay there.

How spooky, our daughter picked up the lychee seeds she'd got left after finishing the fruit and asked if they would grow here. Will encourage her to get potting them up and hope they grow for her. Anyone know anything more about what to expect from them?

Does anybody realise that to get the lychee to fruit you need one male tree and (at least) one female tree? I'm sorry Clarea but you won't get fruits from one plant. In fact until they get bigger you can't tell which they are. I'm new to Growyourown but if you want to try getting a couple of opposite sex ones, I have a couple of seedlings, if you can send me your address by personal message you are welcome to them.
