Need advice for strawberry planting

Morning everyone,

Apologies if this has been discussed on other threads but I could not find info I was looking for, so:

Last year (late spring or summer) my friend was given 3 strawberry plants in 5" pots, and she has never got around to plant them, so these were over-wintered in cool pantry. As she is moving, she gave those plants to me. They are still in their 5" pots, and while still small, started flowering already.

Now, while I've sown some seed this year, I have never grown stawbs before. I'd like to re-pot these into bigger containers, but could not find an info how big a container should be for a single plant, and can I plant all three into one big container? Strawbs are in my utility room at the mo, but I would like to keep those outside. Also, should I remove the flowers for now and then let the nature run it's course once they are outside in their permanent containers?


I also have not got a clue, what kind of stawberry that is, everbearing, day neutral, alpine, etc...

Any advice is greatly appreciated,

You've probably got Bog Standard strawbs.
No special treatment required, whatever type they are, anyway.

In the ground, they need to be about 12" apart. If you cram them too close together, you'll get a smaller crop, and they will need more watering and feeding.

Yours are flowering earlier than outdoor ones, because they are slightly warmer.

You need to harden them off before putting outside ... 7-10 days of gradually increased exposure to the outside.

Thanks Two Sheds, I will pot each one to separate pot then. How big should it be though, 10" or 12" perhaps?

well, just did some googling and it looks like all three plants can go into single 10" pot...

i have a bit of a mixture with mine, some are in big pots together and some in smaller pots by themselves.......the ones who don't compete do give a bit more fruit but it depends on the room you've got, you could experiment and get two in together and put one in a pot by itself?

Hi Norazina, If you have 10 inch pots I would pot each plant up seperately. They will do better if they have a bit of space.
