  • Blackcurrant questions

I hope you'll excuse the newbie with the questions here...
At the end of last summer I was at a garden centre and they were selling off blackcurrant bushes for £1 each. I bought two, stuck them in a pot each and ignored them all winter. In the past few weeks they've both grown a lot and sprouted loads of new leaves, and I just noticed tonight that they've got loads of tiny little flowers on them as well!
I just had a read through one of my gardening books, but unfortunately it tells me next to nothing about blackcurrants, so I was wondering if you lot could tell me anything...
I have no idea what variety the bushes are - at £1 each they don't come with a label! I think they're two different types though. One is much bigger than the other, but the smaller one has more flowers.
So, my questions are: Will the flowers be killed by frost? It seems very early for fruit bushes to be flowering to me, frost is still around most nights. Is it okay to leave them outside still?
How about pollination? Do blackcurrants need a pollinator?
Any other advice about growing them that I need to know?

Thanks for all the help! I know nothing about blackcurrants, I kinda expected them to flower much later than this, I was ever so surprised to see flowers on them now!

Don't worry mine are in flower now too! I don't think they are affected by frost because i've always had tons of fruit even after a late frost.
I would just leave them outside they will be fine

Blackcurrants are hardy. Mine have been active for a few weeks now.
They need a fair bit of room: mine are currantly (geddit?) 3 foot wide and high.

You will need to protect them from blackbirds, who can pogo and will strip the bush in a day (net curtain/fleece/whatever)
