  • Can you cultivate banana plant seedlings from a supermarket banana?

I bought some bananas last week which were quite green, I have just peeled one which looked a bit green still although turning a bit black so I thought I would see if it was ripe enough to eat.

Got a bit of a surprise.

When I peeled it, the banana flesh was a caramel colour and when I snapped it in half it looks like it has dried out, as if it is part crystalised!

The black specks that you normally see inside a banana are dry and a bit bigger than normal. I have always assumed these are tiny seeds. As these are dry does anyone think I would be abe to germinate them?

I'm just glad I didn't give it to my daughter, she would have been mortified and never eaten a banana again.

I understand that all the edible bananas are sterile.

That has saved me some time and trouble then.

I won't bother faffing about with it now then, thanks.

Yes, I learned at the Eden Project that edible bananas are sterile, and so theoretically at risk of extinction if a disease hits them.

When a banana tree has finished fruiting it is cut off at the ground and another one shoots up beside it to supply the new fruit. Bananas have several 'hands' growing on a stem and at the end of the stem is a flower, inside this is about 3 seeds I think. You can get these to grow and if your very lucky you might get a few small fruit. This is what a St. Lucian told me anyway.

All our edible bananas are clones. Bit of a worry really. You only need one new banana disease and the lot gets wiped out!
