blackcurrants for eating raw

I was reading a magazine at work today and it said there's now blackcurrants that you can eat raw but I forgot what variety it was - does anybody know?

Wellington XXX is the usual one but that is an old variety.

Perhaps a new one has come along.

I always thought you could eat any blackcurrent raw.We have always done so with no ill effects.

You can eat any variety but they're normally very tart, there's meant to be some that are as sweet as a blueberry

mine dont even get to leave the allotment usually as they get eaten straight off the bush, so I assume that the variety you mean must be sweeter than normal as they are all edible cooked or not.

I eat mine straight off the bush ~ variety is Poundland Special.

For sweetness:`Ben Sarek’, `Ben Connan’ and the as yet-unreleased `Big Ben’ (which is currently in trials and has the largest and sweetest berries compared to other type)

There is a new variety in the catalogues this year called Ebony, claimed to be sweeter than the traditional varieties and a true dessert variety. I have planted one this Winter, so we shall see if the claims are true.

On the thompson and morgan site it says they'll be dispatched nov 2009 so you might be waiting a while!

And I see that my Ebony, from Marshalls, is going to flower and I shall let it carry fruit so that I can compare it with Ben Connan and Ben Sarek.

Yes I saw that, but when I sent the order they were still advertising this year's Never mind, I've got a couple of others that should crop well this year, I'll just have to be patient

I bought a cheapy from Homebase, its a Ben Lomond, it says its sweet...but I'll have to wait until next year to let you know!
