Summer Raspberry question

I bought some bare root canes - 10 summer and 10 autumn fruiting canes, all planted at the same time about a month ago.

The autumn ones are coming on a treat, little leaves, evidence of growing, excellent. The summer ones just look like sticks in the ground. There is not a single bud on them. Its really odd. They share the same bed, have the same conditions and everything but they are not doing anything. I scraped a tiny bit of bark away from a couple and they are green underneath so i know i've not killed them. Do I need to do something different to make them grow or have I broken them?

I think it's a Time thing. Give them a few more weeks - they may start shooting from below, not the stick bit. That's what some my sister bought did...

oh I hope so. I am not very good at waiting for things to grow sometimes. when i sow seeds i poke down into the compost to see if they have sprouted. I must learn the art of waiting.

Is it possible you have the 2 varieties muddled up? I do this all the time!

Lavender Blue - Mine have done exactly the same thing.

6 weeks ago I planted some summer and some autumn raspberries. The autumn ones sprouted from the base a while ago. The summer ones have JUST started sprouting from the main stem. Its just the way they do it - you'll get a half decent crop of Autumn rasps this year - but not a lot from the summer ones.

You may not get much of a crop from your summer ones for a couple of years. Any new shoots that appear this year will be what gives you next years fruit, as you are finding out they are a little slow to get going and so you may not have many new canes for next years crop. They are worth the wait though.

I have the same problem. I emailed the grower and he said to wait until mid may and if they hadn't grown by then to let him know.

I was about to post the exact same question, so Im very glad to find this thread. I too have some slightly embarrassed looking summer sticks with not a leaf between them, next to rather vigorous looking autumns - I shall have to learn patience...

I am bumping this because I still don't have a single bud on any of my summer raspberries, not a single one. They are still just sticks in the ground. What should I do. Shall i email the supplier and moan at them or just wait a bit longer?

I had a similar query so I will watch this thread with interest. I have number of canes all the the same place/conditions and of the same variety but only one of them has any growth. The others are just twigs in the ground (although they seem to have established themselves as they are quite solidly rooted in the ground). Hopefully they are working away out of sight....

I have noticed that many raspberry canes supplied by nurseries fail to grow.
When I grew raspberries, I seemed to get about 2 out of 10 grow. I've had friends with none out of ten.
If I ever bought raspberries again, I'd wait until the spring and buy leafed-out plants that I knew were alive, or obtain fresh suckers from a friend's allotment.

I've had exactly the same problem with new canes from a 'reputable' nursery. Annoyingly the old canes which I ripped out and left in a pile for 3 months before disposal all had strongly growing shoots on them, despite being fully exposed to the cold of last winter.

Its really rubbish. I've bought from this nursery before and the strawberries have been fantastic - I started with 24 plants and sold over a hundred runners at a car boot still have enough to plant an new bed of them. We ate lots of strawberries in their first year and there are countless flowers on them now. I am going to email the company and ask for advice I think. i am really disappointed. First my squashed sweetcorn and now rubbish raspberries.

I found 2 of my summer canes just starting to produce shoots today, so there is hope for the rest of you too !

I have heard from the nursery and they have offered to replace all the summer canes, free of charge. They have offered me a different variety - its odd, I didn't ask for a replacement or anything, just advice. I think that they know that there is a problem with that variety maybe.
