  • Blimey, my young raspberry canes have buds

I bought some fruit canes from Aldi on the 3rd March, planted them on the 6th, left them in the greenhouse until the 12th April when I put them all outside in their tubs.

I looked this morning and all of them have quite a few buds on them.

When I bought them they were just bare ish, canes which were about 8" tall with a couple of leaves on each one.

Do they normally start to grow fruit when they are only 7 weeks old?

It's so exciting when bare sticks suddenly come to life isn't it?

It is quite normal for the canes to start to grow having been in the ground for 7wks, and the fruit will come. You won't get much this year though as it will be working hard to grow roots and new growth for next year.

If they are summer fruiting, the growth you see will grow and flower and the flowers become fruit. Later this year, more new growth will come from the bottom, usually from just under the soil.

The canes you have at the moment are brown, and will be even dryer (more stick-like) at the end of this summer after they have fruited. The new growth from the very bottom will be green.

At the end of this year when your canes have fruited, you cut them off at ground level, (only the brown ones) and the new green canes will stand over winter ready to start again next year.

And this happens every year. The canes you have will multiply overtime too, as they will shoot from the roots a short distance from the original plant.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.
