  • Which berry is this?

There are lots of canes around the garden and I'm not sure which is which but this one has started fruiting.

Can anyone tell me what it'll end up being and do I need to net them?

    Thanks

Well..not being an expert on fruit!!!

The colour of the leaves of the first piccie suggests white currant
The second piccie looks like a delphinium with white currant fruit!!!

    ..useless aren't I ??....sorry!!!

Difficult to see from the photo. Smell can sometimes help to eliminate blackcurrants. Crush a leaf in your hand and smell. Blackcurrant leaves have a powerful smell of blackcurrants.

Don't laugh. Never had fresh currants in my life so no idea how to eliminate blackcurrants.

Will just wait for them to ripen.
          Does anyone net these?

Think Ribena, there really is no mistaking a blackcurrant bush. I have had red, black and whitecurrants for the past 3 years and I have never netted them and I have always had bumper crops

I have several currant bushes in my garden but they dont produce edible fruits. Lots of pink flowers on them at the minute though so quite pretty.

It's difficult to say, but I think they might be white currants. They look very very much like my white currants...

Not blackcurrant I think, probably white, not long to wait to find out, start netting them when the fruit starts colouring up, or if you see blackbirds eating them.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I've never bothered netting my fruit bushes in the garden and it's not really a problem as I can nip out everyday to pick the fruit - I don't mind the birds getting some, I buy them food for goodness sake so dont' mind sharing so long as they don't nick the lot. However, the plan is to build a large fruit cage over all the soft fruit on the lottie (maybe next year...) as I can't get there every day so it leaves the birds more time to pick for me!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                      Next stupid question

how can I tell when they are ready for picking except just trying a few every day?

thank you everyone who's give me all the lovely advice on this board

Well, they will change colour!!! from their present greeny colour to either black, red or white. The red and white ones will become translucent, like gems I always think. The individual berries will also "give" a little when gently squeezed between finger and thumb. There are photos on my website of all the varieties of ripe currants.
I have to net all my soft fruit or the birds will not only take the lot, but also break the branches with their weight!!
