  • lidl apple tree - growing, but no blossom

    Hi

I bought a lidl bare rooted apple tree 2 years ago and planted it in the garden where it gets good sun.

It didnt do much i nthe first summer and last summer got lots of leafy and twigy growth.

This year it has exploded full of leaves and is getting bigger and bigger (still a small tree) but there is not a sign of even the slightest blossom

    Is this normal?

    thanks

    Morris

Completely normal - especially without proper pruning and with certain varieties and certain rootstocks.

One of the reasons that the Lidl fruit is cheaper than nurseries and GCs is that it is a year or 2 younger than theirs. So you don't pay as much, but usually have to wait a little longer for fruit.

I bought a bare rooted Lidl apple tree this Spring and it is now covered in flowers.
If your tree is growing vigorously and not flowering, I would suspect that the ground is too fertile.

I bought various apples from Aldi last year and cordoned them up the side of the lottie. They all had fruit on them last year albeit not many. This year the previous tennant (plonker!) of my neighbouring allotment had a huge bonfire which scorched the young apple trees! This year all but one have no blossom, but still a few leaves where the buds were facing to my plot.
I hope that by losing the blossom and fruit this year it will give the plants a bit of a chance to perk up for next year!
