Fruiting age varies considerably. It is my understanding that Merryweather is more keen to grow and less keen to fruit than many of the plum/gage family.
The rootstock will also affect fruiting age to some extent, as will the soil conditions. Soil that it too rich and too moist will encourage most fruit trees to just keep growing and they may not fruit for many years.
It's fairly normal not to get much fruit for the first few years. Young trees need to be growing, otherwise they become stunted. Even if they have some blossoms, young trees often drop the fruits before they mature.
Fruit trees generally need to be over five years old, before you can expect good crops. In centuries past, using "seedling" rootstocks, 10-15 years wait for fruit was quite normal.
