  • Glen Ample not doing very well

Last year I bought 18 Raspberry canes, 6 Glen Ample, 6 Glen Moy and 6 Autumn Bliss.

The Glen Moy and the Autumn Bliss have done really well, got some fruit of them last year and this year I hope to do even better!

The Glen Ample however have not done well. Last year they grew to perhaps 8 inches to a foot tall (the other varieties grew at least 2 -3 times this), produced no fruit and then died back almost completely. I was not too worried about this as I expected better things this year when they had a chance to become established. However so far this year they have done very little, they have grown about 6 inches so far.

From what I have read they are supposed to be a really reliable variety and easy to grow! What have I done?

Does anyone have any ideas why I am having no joy and indeed if there is a way to kick start them?

    Hi there.
The Glen ample I put in the year before last did rubbish too, I was really disappointed, I'd followed all the instructions I'd got with them but they still looked weedy!
This spring I have mulched them with well rotted FYM and although they are still small they seem to be sturdier, I'm hoping they have been developing good root systems and this year are going to surprise me!
As you likely know, they will crop on the previous years growth, so if all your growth is new, you may not see a crop until next year (sorry).
BTW my autumn bliss are fab too!
Imagination is everything, it is a preview of what is to become.

I planted some Glen Ample last year too, and 3 of them didn't grow at all, the other 3 grew a few inches and no more. I put it down to the manure I'd put in the soil, thinking it was some of that contaminated stuff. But that should be long gone and the remaining 3 are still struggling to do much... I was planning to buy some more for next year, maybe I'll just go with a different variety!
