  • new apple tree

    Hi

I bought a sunset apple tree from morrisons a few weeks ago, I planted it straight away in a large bucket.
I am now thinking that I should plant it on my allotment, it has a few broken branches, it was only £5.
Should I plant it facing the rising sun, or anything like that, and should I get its branches flat. I was thinking that I should plant it next to the path, but its a path used by everyone, even dog walkers.

If you plant it next to a path, every passer-by will pick an apple to taste - it's human nature. Will any be left for you?

Branch position and tree shape is up to you. Branches can be tied to a support if you want to grow it as a fan/espalier (just a few bamboo canes tied together and pushed into the ground will do for a young tree).
Badly broken branches should be tidied up as soon as possible. Branches that are only partial-thickness breaks may heal themselves, although canker may get into the wounds and may need follow-up pruning during the winter, to get rid of cankers at the wound sites.

Regarding planting aspect, it would be advisable for it to get at least six hours of sunlight each day. An aspect that gets morning sun is better for frost-prone areas, to warm the branches and blossoms earlier in the day after a cold night.

      Hi

I have a large mound of earth at the end of my allotment that may be cleared soon, so I may leave it in its bucket a little longer.

      Many thanks .. FG
