Newly planted trees often drop their fruits. You'll be lucky if the pests/birds don't eat your last fruit.
Your tree may also need a pollination partner (a different, compatible variety), which could be why it only has one fruit.
But letting a tree grow for a couple of years gives them a good start in life. Young-fruiting trees tend to be extra dwarfed and less tolerant of drought. They are also more likely to be blown over in the wind, due to being too top heavy and not growing good roots to supply stability, food and water..

It sounds like it got too dry recently. I had the same problem last year despite the weather back then.Blogging at..... www.thecynicalgardener.wordpress.com

Mine had loads of blossom but very little fruit. Have hung silver paper pie tins in it to scare off birds. (Didn't realise how many steak and kidney pies I'd ate at the allotment until I had a clear out!!!!)My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

we bought a cherry tree over the weekend, it was in a box at homebase and we're going to plant it this week.. it says on the box though that we need 2 so they can pollinate but they only had one.. is it ok if there's another one in our avenue, will it be close enough to pollinate?
