Black pear tree leaves

I recently bought - for £5 - a conference pear tree. I say tree it was a dry stalk about 2 feet high with no greenery at all - I'm wondering if this was a good idea at all.

However, having been planted in a large pot for a few months - 2 shoots have appeared, and turned into leaves - but these leaves have got black crispy edges.

Any ideas what might have gone wrong?

Has it been watered enough? Was it planted in compost?
It might have been dug out of the nursery last winter and therefore lots of it's roots were damaged or left behind.
Pears don't mind rather heavy, damp soil. They usually hate dry soil and can quickly die in such conditions.

Ah, If they like heavy damp soil - best I get it straight into the allotment!

It was supplied with a rather pitiful and utterly dried up root ball - I suspect it'll take a while to get it'self sorted out...

The same happened to my beurre hardy, i potted it, then when leaves grew, put it in my plot, it grew a few more leaves and then curled up black and a bit crispy, i thought it may be some disease, but dont know what.
