cherry tree ?

The house we moved into last year has a well established cherry tree, i know this maybe a silly question, ( i dont know much about trees ) but are all cherry trees edible ? and how could i find out what sort it is ?

louise,
you should know now if its a flowering cherry or a sweet/morello cherry as you should have green fruit on it now. if not it might still be a sweet cherry but a none self fertile one which is lacking a polination partner.

Thanks for your reply, and yes it has loads of little green fruit on it now.
