On the topic of raspberries...Last year I put about 16 raspberry canes into one of my raised beds and whilst I got a handful of raspberries last year I cut them back to ground level last autumn as directed. Also not all of them took so where they have sprouted is a bit inconsistently placed. However they have put on a lot of growth and I have systematically tied them to canes. However whilst some of them have grown to about 5' there does not seem to be any raspberries in bloom yet. I was wondering what I have done wrong. I fertilised them with chicken manure pellets a few months ago and added a mulch of ash, leaves and moss. So whilst they are growing well they are just not producing anything?

hmmmm, from what I know of wild raspberries, they don't grow in windy places, they tend to prefer hollows or shallow bays near rivers, they love water and hate wind, maybe put up some wind break stuff?, a mate of mine uses wires and stakes then ties the old fronds of canary palm to the wires, these last for years and although they can look a bit untidy they seriously disrupt wind, an unused corner can be given over to bamboo, providing not only free sticks but good wind break material.

I planted a new raspberry bed this spring - 36 canes of three varieties. They are all growing well and have all produced fruit, which has all been removed as it appears. It promises a bumper crop for next year, although rasps are generally very generous.
