Figs

Figs? When are they usually ready, how do you tell ?
I have two fig trees in the south facing corner of the posh walled garden, dripping with figs which are now getting quite large - still green and quite soft to the touch - how do you know when they are ripe for picking ?

Hi sewer rat, I think the general way is to lift the figs upwards gently and when ripe they should part from the tree easily. They have to ripen on the tree as I'm sure figs don't ripen any further once picked.

Ooh, lucky you. I love fresh figs!! I would say the best way to tell if they are ripe is pick one and eat it (that's what I did as a child on holiday in Spain)

Figs start to droop when they ripen and they feel softer. They also change colour - the most commonly grown fig, Brown Turkey turns yellowish. You will soon get to know when they are just ready by the look and feel as the skin becomes more pliable. Enjoy !
