  • How do I actually grow a fruit standard?

    Hi

I keep reading that you can make your own standards out of gooseberrys, currants, etc.

My question is how do you do it?

I bought 9 currant bushes bare rooted in the winter, but these had 4 or so canes. What do you do with that - do you make standards out of something else? I tried cuttting one back to one cane, but the buds have flown out in all directions anyway?

What about gooeseberry - How do you do it?

    i would love some advice

    thanks

Haven't yet done it yet md but I intend to!
First I intend to root a cutting which will give me a single stem to start with then just rub out the lower shoots and allow the main shoot to grow upwards.
I intend always leaving a goodly amount of leaves to keep the plant growing.
I would imagine it will take two or three years to get to the height I require.
It doesn't work with blackcurrants but I have deffo seen whitecurrants and gooseberries grown on a single leg! Not sure about redcurrants though?
