When we bought this house the owner and neighbour told us that the old peach tree in the front garden was knackered and needed coming down. It hadn't produced fruit for about 10 years and was full of disease and pests.
So.....we left it for the first year...and low and behold....it behaved exactly as they said despite us spraying/feeding it ( not organic - I know!!). not even one....so in the Autumn we ( OH) cut it down to 3 ft high trunk ( to make it into a bird table stand or something).
Last Spring it grew a few little shoots from the main stem- and we just left it alone.
This year more shoots ...and it was covered in flowers!!!!!!
15 baby peaches later we were shocked to think we might actually get a peach this year!
A few dropped off in June- but last night we took the ripest- and it was YUMMY!!!!!!
Thank goodness we didn't dig it up!
Looks like a drastic haircut and feed did it some good after all!
Moral of this story is...don't always do what you're told....and....give things a second chance!
...and by the way....these were not just any old peaches- but the wonderful white peaches! YUM!
