  • Japanese wineberry

I have just acquired a Japanese Winebery- a single stem about a metre long. I have had a bit of trouble finding out much about the plant itself- what sort of size it grows, for example. I've done the google search but nothing conclusive!

Does anyone have any experience of them they can pass on? I heard about it on Gardener's Question Time and it sounded like it was worth a try. I plan to grow it through my front fence which catches the sun for most of the day. We don't have many passers-by so the fruit shouldn't disappear (unless my daughters find it)

    According to Hessayon -

"An unusuall type in many ways. Firstly it's not a hybrid but a seperate Rubrus species. It is also extremely decorative - the arching canes are covered with soft bright red bristles. The small seed filled berries are sweet but bland and they ripen all at once during August. Yeilds are quite low. "

it doesn't give specific details of cultivation but as it's in the Balckberries & there hybrids section I guess you treat it as a blackberry

the plants for a future database is fantastic. my only criticism is the lack of info about where to source items...
