  • How do you sex a kiwi?

I have been given a kiwi tree as a present, but understand you can get female, male and self fertile varities. The label which comes with it gives no indication of its variety, so does anyone know how you tell which sex or variety a kiwi is?

    Cheers.

    Welcome to the Vine Jojo.

I'm afraid I have no idea how to sex a kiwi and it could be a long wait (3 years or so) before you get fruit.

I would expect that it is a self fertile variety if it has come from a garden centre or similar so you should be lucky and get some fruit. If you do a search for pruning kiwi, TonyF has given some good info about it somewhere on here.

Be warned though, they do get very big.

I think scarey is a little optimistic to think that a garden centre wouldn't sell a male or female plant on its own. However most kiwi's sold now are either jenny or the mini variety both of which are self fertile. Had fruit on my mini one this year and only purchased it last year.

What does the label say exactly and where was it bought from?
"Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble"

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I'd suggest buying it a couple of drinks first at least - it's only polite.
