  • Rogue rootstock

A couple of years ago, I bought an apricot tree (Tomcot) grafted onto a different rootstock. Unfortunately, it persistently sprouts from below the graft, at the expense of the tree above. I've been chopping off the rogue branches (plum, I think) but they keep coming back. Is there anything I can do to stop them for good? Or would I be better giving it up as a bad job and just getting a new apricot tree? The apricot bit is about 4 feet high, if that helps.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Plum rootstocks (often used on apricot/almond and related stone fruits) are known for suckering.
The best way to deal with the suckers is to dig down to their point of origin with the roots and rip/hack them off (don't cut neatly!) in a very crude kind of way, deliberately leaving a nasty and messy wound at the underground point where the sucker arose.
Cutting them off neatly with clippers/shears/lawn mower etc has the same effect as pruning; next year there will be 2-3 replacing the one you chopped off!
