No expert here Strawberryman but I'm growing Boskoop Glory outdoors in Perthshire. It's made grapes but not ripe yet. It came recommended for outdoor growing. See what other suggestions you get.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Early autumn (right now!) is the best time to plant just about anything.
Most plants have a large burst of root growth in September when they're taking the nutrients down from the leaves and into the roots. Then they go dormant until the spring.
I'd say that root growth seems to be:
Spring: 30%
Summer: 20%
Autumn: 40%
Winter: 10%
By planting in early autumn, you maximise the root growth before the next season and get better establishment. Bare-root plants tend to lose a year because their large autumn burst of soft roots get ripped off in Nov-Jan when they get dug up and shipped..

I would second Alice's suggestion of Boskoop, but you could also consider Mueller-Thurgau.
Both of these are hardy outdoor vines that should do ok in the Midlands.
I know they are for your lottie, but if there is anyway you could somehow get them onto a south facing structure, shed wall or anything, it would help them no end.Bob Leponge
