Aldi plum tree - not Victoria

Hi, 18 months ago I bought 2 Victoria plum trees from Aldi, they have both grown well and the one tree has born fruit. However the fruit is not that of a Victoria plum, the tree must have been put in the wrong packet. The plums are very large, egg shaped and a deep purple colour. What I wondered was if anyone else bought one of these mis-named plums or if anyone could hazard a guess as to what the variety might be.

There is a plum with large egg shape purple fruit, the `purple egg plum` ( also called martins seedling ) , but more probably it would be Marjories Seedling as you get that listed for sale ive never seen purple egg for sale , opal also is listed as being purple but my opal didnt go purple though and were very ripe and falling off the tree, yellow and dark red not purple , like victoria colouring just bigger

Although I don't remember the details of tree type and where bought, I have heard a number of people saying, over the years, that the "discount" tree they bought was not the labelled variety.
That's the risk you take when you buy cheap.
Having said that, I had once bought some fruit trees from a very respected nursery and - a couple of years after planting - it became apparent that two of them had somehow swapped their labels.
Fortunately, they were both on the same rootstock, so would have grown to a somewhat similar size - it wasn't as if I'd ended up planting a M25 Bramley in a 12-inch pot and an M27 Egremont Russet in a 20ft space.

Mmmmm, I bought one blackcurrant and one redcurrant from our local discount shop, both in boxes with pretty pictures on the outside - and they both turned out to be redcurrants. Lovely fruit though.

Almost certainly, the mystery plum is Czar. We had the same discussion about 3 months ago. I'll browse back through the topics and threads when I get time and see if I can find it.

Hi, thanks for all your replies. Czar definately rings a bell, I can remember there being two types of plum to choose from and I went for Victoria, Czar must have been the other. However given the size and quality of the fruit I can't complain. I think I paid 4.99 each for the trees which even with the mistake I think they were good value. A few years ago I paid 14.99 a tree from a nursery and they both shrivelled away[I took them back and got a refund]. Many thanks again everyone.

We got a victoria plum from aldi this year, was a few flowers but no plums. Still the tree looks quite good now and is bigger with much more foliage. How long was it until you got a crop?

It will take at least a couple of years ali. Is yours in open ground or in a pot. I think they do much better in the ground.

Sounds like my plum tree but I bought mine from Lidl, labelled as a Victoria. Dark purple plums this year, or I should say plum I've only got one Lovely plum, sweet and juicy much better than supermarket ones!

I'd always wanted a Victoria plum tree though!

Don't worry too much about insisting on Victoria.
I've had a Victoria for several years and although it's easy to grow, self-fertile and reliable, the flavour of the fruit is nothing special.

I quite agree. The reason that Victoria became popular is that it is multi-purpose. Eating, cooking, preserving etc. But I don't think it excels at any.

How interesting. I bought an Aldi 'Victoria' plum at about the same time, and guess what - I have an apple tree instead. Deep red apples - they almost look ornamental. Will let you know what they taste like when they're ready!
