Are raspberries best facing north or south?

I have some young raspberry plants in medium sized pots and was wondering where in the garden to position them.

I was going to have them facing south but since reading they like shade, should I move them to the other side so that they face north?

Don't think it makes any difference but they are Glen Ample variety.

Raspberries are a woodland plant so are use to shade, mine are in the shade and facing North and do well.

Mine are in the border against the fence. Border faces west, so semi-shaded, and they do very well there. If yours are going to live permanently in pots you will have to keep an eye on watering. They also grow quite tall so will need support to stop them blowing/falling over.

Raspberries grow extremely well in Scotland ... that should give you an idea of what conditions they like

Mine face east but get a few hours of sun from the south down a 'lane' which runs down the side of the house. They like it cool and some shade but they like a bit of sun too. Especially on the cool summered Yorkshire coast.

mine are in full sun and now we have taken the weed supressing liner off and mulched the bed with home made compost, they are going great guns. I scoffed loads and loads yesterday.

I inherited mine on the plot and they run from north to south and get a lot of sun (when clouds allow!). Did very well this year too!

Mine (sorry don't know what variety as I inherited them) are running north to south and thanks tothe hottish weather we had in the West Midlands last week are fruiting really well. Picking one (sometimes two) punnetts every other day of a row which is approx. 14 feet - most of them being eaten with my breakfast/any surplus being frozen. Next year they are going on another plot we have and being put in a fruit cage to give them more space, along with some 'golden' ones I bought cheap about a month ago. Hopefully they will continue to give lovely fruit for (at least) the next two weeks until we go on holiday.

Will this be ok for them to be tied to as they get bigger?

We only have an average sized garden so they won't be allowed to get too rampant so they are only in 12" pots.

I inherited mine, and they run East-West, so are south facing. They seemed to do really well - but the 7ft weeds (and I'm not exaggerating!) they were hidden by could have provided shade!

However, since the person who built the raspberry frame obviously placed it like that deliberately, maybe they do do well anyway. Being in NE Scotland they possibly need all the sun they can get!
