  • Any ideas?

    Hello everyone,

During my holiday in the southern Czech city of Brno in late September, I came across this beautiful climbing vine. It was quite common, being used to cover fences and the like. I never got to know its name, though I was flatly advised that the deep blue grape like berries should not be eaten! Could anyone back in Blighty put a name to this?

By the way, virtually everyone in the area grew their own grapes and the Moravian area wine is delicious.

    With regards,

    Mark.

For what it's worth it looks like Parthenocissus to me. I've got one going up my shed but its the Henryi version with white ribs to the leaves.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Don't think it's Virginia Creeper Flum - too bushy looking. VC usually hugs walls, though I love the spectacular autumn colouring.

Virginia Creeper is of the Parthenocissus family - there are quite a few different varieties and it might be worthwhile checking them out.

Parthenocissus quinquefolia, aka Virginia Creeper. Dark blue/nearly black fruits (it's part of the grape family)
