  • Cherry Tree

Hi. I'm thinking of buying a cherry tree for my (very small!) garden. I'd like to be able to eat the cherries straight off the tree as well as cooking them. Obviously I'd need a self-fertile variety on a dwarfing rootstock.
So what variety(ies) do you recommend please?

    Hi Ladylottie

Try this one, highly recommended - Buy Cherry Sunburst online from Dobies

Seek not to know all the answers, just to understand the questions.

I have Sunburst and Stella growing as eating cherries. The problem is the birds get most of them, even when covered with a net. For cooking you may try Morello.

If you have a very small garden, but have un-occupied frence, why not try a fan trained one? I've a Sunburst on dwarfing rootsock which is about 4 years old and doing well (though it was wasps that got my cherries this year ) You can buy ones that are already trained, or if you want the cheaper version, buy a young tree and diy.

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Thanks everyone - I think I will be going for Sunburst. DTC - the Dobies write up sounds good. BS - Although your fan trained cherry sounds a great idea, I don't have a "spare" fence.
