How to start growing fruit!

Just bought from focus 6 sticks of fruit - 3 blackberry canes, well twigs wrapped in soil - 3 for £5, and 1 tayberry, 1 blackcurrent and 1 raspberry, not ready to go in the ground, so put them into pots, and filled with soil, and watered. And will keep in garage until ready to go in, when can they go into the ground to make sure i get crops for 2010?

Also, I want to put other fruit in, can I take cuttings from wild bushes, or does anyone have any that i can have?

To take cuttings, what and where do I need to cut it from, and when should I do it, and do I just put them into a pot? please any advice would be welcome, I want to create a big fruit garden

Is your garage light? They'll die in the dark

If your planting space isn't ready, just heel them in for now, and move them before March, when growth gets going.

As to cuttings: what fruit do you mean? It's different methods for different plants.

I would not take cutting from wild fruit. Not worth it and will not be sweet.

It pays to buy proper young plants. Decide what you want to grow and look at the varieties that are available from a nursery. Also ask locally what do others grow in your area that are successful.

I agree, put your new plants outdoors, they should be hardy. A garage is no good and they will die.

The garage is only a temp measure, on plant it said put them in with 24 hours of buying, but i wasnt able to, so i thought for a week its better to put them in pot with soil and compost, with some water, and leave in garage, and get the area planned for planting and get them in asap, than to leave in the box with growing medium

Please forgive me adding some advice, as I am also a new member.

Have you thought of growing strawberries?

I have been growing strawberry plants for years in pots, they are really easy as long as you give them LOTS of water in the growing season. I have also found (touch wood) slugs/snails dont like the leaves or stems because they are rough/slightly prickly.

The only thing is they only last 2-3 years, but you can take the runners off and grow new little plants.

Also I have found the good old car boot sale an invaluable place to pick up plants - I got 5 strawberries for £1 from an allotment holder this autumn.

Sounds good, Im hoping to get some strawb plants from a work colleague in my building, so hopefully can also start those!!

You also dont need any space, as you can grow them in pots, or planters...
