I am going to train some red and white currants and gooseberries as espaliers. I understand black currants have a different growth habit and can't be grown on a leg. Is there any way a black currant can be grown against a fence or are they always grown as a bush on open ground? All suggestions appreciated.

I suppose you could espalier your blackcurrants, you would just have to use multiple stems thats all?
I have a dozen blackcurrant cutting 'planted' in the allotment but still haven't pruned my whitecurrants or redcurrants. Might do that tomorrow and try and strike a few cuttings for use as half standards. Also need to peg down a few branches of my favourite gooseberry for the same reason.

by Marb67I have just given it a real pruning before it comes into leaf in the hope of getting some regeneration and the tree not having to work as hard getting water and nutrients higher up. If this doesn't work I'll replace it next year with something else.
